RuneScape's XP curve is one of the most famous in gaming — exponential, brutal, and mathematically elegant. Understanding it explains why every player has a 'half of 99' moment.
The exponential formula
XP per level grows by a factor of 2 every 7 levels. The sum of these values, divided by four, gives the exact cumulative XP — 83 for level 2, 13,034,431 for 99, and 104,273,167 for 120.
Half of 99 is 92
Because the curve doubles every 7 levels, reaching 92 puts you at roughly half the total XP of 99. It's the famous psychological wall — the second half of the grind is entirely invisible until the math makes it obvious.
XP/hour is the real metric
The formula tells you how much; XP/hour tells you how long. Dividing remaining XP by a realistic hourly rate converts the mountain into a schedule — and that schedule is what makes or breaks a 99.
Frequently asked questions
13,034,431 XP. The formula is exponential, so the jump from 92 to 99 equals everything you earned from 1 to 92.
Each level n adds floor(n + 300·2^(n/7)) XP, summed from 1 and divided by 4 — giving 83 XP for level 2 and 13,034,431 for level 99.
Because the XP curve doubles every 7 levels — at level 92 you've earned roughly half of what 99 requires.
