Every Minecraft player has watched their XP bar crawl near level 30 — the enchanting milestone. The XP system looks simple, but it's a three-part curve with one number worth knowing: 1,395.
The three-part formula
Levels 0–16 grow gently (n² + 6n), 17–31 accelerate (2.5n² − 40.5n + 360), and 32+ get brutal (4.5n² − 162.5n + 2220). That switch is why level 40 feels like a different game from level 20.
Why 30 is the magic number
Enchanting is capped at level 30, and the XP cost to reach it is the landmark all players grind toward. Past 30, levels cost far more than they add, so efficient players stop, enchant, and reset.
The XP farm economy
The fastest path to 30 isn't mining — it's a farm that converts spawns or smelting into XP. Once you have one, 'how much XP do I need' becomes 'how many minutes does it take.'
Frequently asked questions
Exactly 1,395 total XP. Levels 0–16 follow n² + 6n, and 17–30 follow 2.5n² − 40.5n + 360.
In three segments: levels 0–16 cost n² + 6n XP, 17–31 cost 2.5n² − 40.5n + 360, and beyond 31 cost 4.5n² − 162.5n + 2220 total XP.
Because the curve switches from linear-ish growth to quadratic. Above level 30 each level costs hundreds more XP than the last.
