What this means
In a single-elimination bracket, the total number of matches is simply teams minus one — the champion is the only team never eliminated by a loss. Rounds come from the power of two that covers the team count: 16 teams need 4 rounds, 17–32 need 5. When the count isn't a power of two, early byes let the bracket fill out to a clean size. Total time is matches times the average match length.
Recommendations
- Choose team counts at powers of two (8, 16, 32) for the cleanest brackets with no byes.
- Schedule buffer between rounds — overruns are the norm in real tournaments.
- For odd counts, byes in round one are preferable to mid-bracket imbalance.
