What this means
Pool volume is the pool's footprint times its average depth. A rectangle is length × width × depth; a circle is π × radius² × depth; an oval uses π × (half-length) × (half-width) × depth. For pools that slope from a shallow to a deep end, use the average of the two depths. Volume matters because every chemical dose — chlorine, pH balancers, salt — is quoted per 10,000 litres or per 1,000 gallons, so an accurate number makes dosing safe and predictable.
Recommendations
- Use the average of shallow and deep-end depths for a sloped pool — the volume formula assumes a level bottom.
- Add chemicals by the pool's true volume, not the seller's guess — overdosing burns swimmers' eyes and underdosing lets algae win.
- Re-measure if you add or remove water features; waterfalls and fountains change the effective volume slightly.
Watch out
- Kidney-shaped and freeform pools need a geometric approximation — break them into rectangles and circles and add the volumes.
- The fill figure excludes the volume of equipment, steps and ledges, which displace a little water.
