What this means
Gravel is bought by weight but laid by volume, so we calculate both. Volume is area × depth. Multiplying by the material's density (about 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre for typical gravel) gives the weight to order. Suppliers usually price by the tonne or ton, so the weight is the number you'll quote.
Recommendations
- For a decorative gravel surface, 4–5 cm (1.5–2 in) deep is typical; driveways need 8–10 cm (3–4 in) or more over a sub-base.
- Order a little extra — gravel compacts and settles, and spreading is never perfectly even.
- Different aggregates have different densities; adjust the density field for sand, ballast or crushed stone.
