What this means
CPM (cost per mille) is the price of 1,000 ad impressions — the core currency of display, video and social advertising. It's just cost ÷ impressions × 1,000, but flipping the formula lets you forecast either direction: how much a reach goal will cost, or how much reach a budget will buy. Because it's normalised per thousand views, CPM lets you compare placements and platforms on an even footing regardless of campaign size.
Recommendations
- Compare CPMs across placements before buying — the lowest CPM isn't always the best if the audience is off-target.
- Pair CPM with a click or conversion metric; cheap impressions that never convert cost more in the end.
- Use the 'Cost' mode to budget a campaign backwards from a reach goal.
Watch out
- CPM measures cost of reach, not results — a low CPM with poor targeting can still waste spend.
- Reported impressions can include low-quality or non-viewable views; check the viewability definition.
